How to Train Your Dragon Movies in Order
Hiccup, Toothless, and the rest of Berk’s Viking misfits embark on an incredible adventure in this first installment. The animation is exquisite, and its themes of friendship, trust, and bravery have won it legions of fans across generations.
Dragons: The Nine Realms takes place 1,300 years after the events of How to Train Your Dragon 3. It introduces new characters while expanding on the mythos of its predecessor films.
The Original Movie
How to Train Your Dragon is the first movie in the franchise and an excellent introduction to Hiccup and Toothless’ world. It is packed with action, humor, heart, and gorgeous animation; no wonder many people love this franchise!
How To Train Your Dragon 2 is the follow-up to the original movie and is even better than its predecessor. The sequel explores themes like family, leadership, and loss more emotionally than its predecessor. At the same time, the animation is breathtaking, and the characters gain more depth and personality than before – it is essential viewing for fans of this franchise!
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World marks an epic conclusion to this beloved franchise. Set 1,300 years into the future, when dragons have all but become myths to modern society, a group of children bring back a mysterious dragon from its home world; Hiccup must face his greatest challenge yet to save both dragons and Vikings alike from certain death.
Ideally, for the best viewing experience, I suggest beginning with How To Train Your Dragon and The Hidden World before moving on to the other films. While watching them out of order is also acceptable, you will probably enjoy them more if you watch them chronologically.
HTTYD also includes several short films and a TV series with multiple seasons; short films bridge any gaps between film releases. Furthermore, an ongoing live-action Dragons series is in development.
The Second Movie
The second installment in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise begins where the original did. A high-flying adventure, it explores themes such as family, leadership, and coming of age as Hiccup changes Berk from being a village that killed dragons for survival into one where dragons and Vikings live together peacefully.
Animation in this sequel is even more stunning than in its predecessor, while characters have grown even more relatable and likable compared to before. Any fan of this franchise should make time to watch this incredible flick!
If you have not seen the first movie, it is highly advised that you watch it before seeing the second. Otherwise, much of its character development and plot line will go unseen and could prove confusing or disappointing.
How to Train Your Dragon 3 is an impressive conclusion to an outstanding trilogy. The film explores Hiccup and Toothless’ relationship as they face new threats against dragons and humans, leaving viewers satisfied and saddened. Also, it is an ideal movie to share with children as it will teach them valuable lessons on friendship and courage.
The Third Movie
How to Train Your Dragon is an iconic franchise with over ten years of popularity. The original film introduced us to Hiccup and Toothless, two unlikely friends who defied tradition and transformed human and dragon relations forever. Subsequent movies continued their adventures together as they helped their fellow Vikings and dragons live peacefully together while facing threats such as warlords, hunters, and cannibalistic dragons – eventually concluding their trilogy with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 2019.
Hiccup and Toothless have led a new generation of Vikings and dragons in Berk, yet continue to combat fear among villagers about dragons. When an unknown threat surfaces, Hiccup and Toothless must travel together in search of The Hidden World, an imaginary realm where dragons have lived for millennia.
Note that the How to Train Your Dragon franchise extends far beyond just movies; an animated television series follows Hiccup, Toothless, and their friends through more adventures. Furthermore, DreamWorks Animation has produced numerous spin-offs and short films connected with its popular franchises.
An appealing spin-off idea might include creating a prequel series focusing on Nuffkin and Zephyr, Hiccup’s children who grew up as chieftains before them – this could show what life was like growing up around dragons!
One potential sequel would explore the world of dragons from an unusual angle. For instance, it might focus on those not featured in the original trilogy who may provide opportunities to develop an entirely new story that builds upon what had already been established by previous films.
Universal Pictures may produce a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon as another potential spin-off film, similar to how Monsters University and Despicable Me had success as live-action adaptations of popular animated movies, but whether or not this will translate to How to Train Your Dragon is unknown at this point.
The Hidden World
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World brings a satisfying conclusion to its epic trilogy with stunning animation, touching characters, and an emotional arc that makes this film genuinely worthwhile. Focusing on family, leadership, and war-related traumatization, its energy remains top-notch while characters remain endearing and relatable. It’s a rare trilogy capper that works!
Instead of the five-year gap between films bridged by television series, this final installment occurs just one year after the second movie. It opens with a dragon scavenging for food in a village, presumably after events of the second movie, and then Hiccup and Toothless face new challenges when they discover an island home to an untamable and elusive Night Fury; their search for her leads them deep into the mythic Hidden World where dragons and other creatures await them.
Hiccup and Toothless’s journey into the Hidden World is touching and heartwarming as they learn to trust one another while exploring friendship’s value. Furthermore, their voyage teaches them an unexpected sense of love – not necessarily romantic but based on deep affection between friends and family – giving the film its emotional core.
The film also explores themes of heroism, loyalty, and family in an emotional film experience. Hiccup, Toothless, and other Vikings and dragons demonstrate their courage by being willing to sacrifice themselves in defense of those they care about – an impactful message about the importance of heroism in any community.
Hiccup and Toothless demonstrate the power of teamwork through their heroic deeds to save the day and assist their friends, an invaluable lesson for children to keep in mind when facing challenging circumstances. This movie offers children a powerful reminder always to work together when faced with difficulty or unexpected events.
Hiccup and Toothless’ journey illustrates family’s value, teaching us to respect each other with care and love. The film delivers an invaluable message that will resonate across generations and generations of viewers alike.
